Last Wednesday my sister flew down from Sydney for a short visit. It was sooo good to see her.
Day one we just hung out, chatting and getting excited about the baby. It was kind of surreal to make such a big thing out of our little Jelly Bean. Sean and I are very excited, and have been know to dance around our apartment singing, “We’re having a baby!!!” But most people around us are so used to the idea of Little JB now that they don’t make a big deal out of it. So, Elizabeth shows up, bringing the Baby Dance with her, so everyone else in the family decided to join it. I also got my first baby gifts this weekend. It was fun ripping the wrapper to bits in order to reveal the secrets within.
On day two we decided to visit Adelaide’s Monarto Zoo. It’s about 2 hours from our house, and by the time we piled out of Stephanies van I was somewhat green. At one point in the journey I thought, “God, if we don’t get there soon, I’m not gonna make it!!!” About 5 seconds later Stehpanie proclaims, “Oh thank God, it’s the turn off!” It was a hot sticky day, and the Zoo is in the middle of the dry scrubland of South Australia. It’s HUGE!! All the animals are in Natural habitat, eg. the Lions have 10 hectares all to themselves. There is an airconditioned bus that takes you through the whole park, so for the most part we escaped the heat. The highlight of the day was feeding the giraffes. Well, one giraffe. Luke got some really good shots of her trying to lick and eat his camera. Then we missed out bus and had to walk back to the Gift Shop/Cafe. This ended up being a good thing, cause along the way we met some Ostriches (behind a fence) who were protecting their nest. It was fun to watch them do their little “Keep away from the nest” dance but I was very happy for the fence…. The day ended with a BBQ and the usual family banter.
Day Three was very laid back and lazy. We started the day looking at photos from the Mitchell’s trip to Asia and Elizabeth’s trip to Tonga where she swam with the whales. Then came Elizabeth’s and Jordan’s game of chess. Elizabeth is able to win any game of chess using any peice from the board.
Elizabeth: “Jordan, you’re in check.”
Jordan: “No I’m not.”
E: “Yes you are. Look at… oh, sorry, that’s your piece.”
Ten Minutes later….
E: “You can’t do that!! You’re in check… oh, that’s the same bishop…”
All this is punctuated with various grunts and explitives on E’s part. I guess you had to be there.
That evening we all went out for Stephanie’s Birthday. We went to this quaint little restaurant called “The Old Clarendon Inn”, in the hills east of Adelaide. We had to wait a while for our food (which I don’t like at the moment, cause these days when I’m hungry, it’s painful) but in the end the garlic bread, fresh rolls and salad were good. I was disappointed with my meal, but I think it might have been that by the time I got it I was over hungry and couldn’t enjoy it as much.
After a Sisters Photo Shoot (featuring The Bump) we said good bye to Elizabeth. It’s gonna be a while before we see her again… Three days isn’t enough…
