On Thursday we gave away our rambunctious female Golden Retreiver. She was on her best behaviour for her new master, but when we tried to put her in the truck, she didn’t want any of it. Dogs know what’s going on and she was quite upset to be leaving us and going with this strange person. However, I know in about a week, she’ll be very content in her new home and all the attention she gets from the family there.

Today we said goodbye to Dr Pepper, our Miniature Pincher. She also put on a good show for her new owners, and even jumped right into their truck with a big smile – I think it was cause her prized cushion was on the seat. But she looked a little confused when I closed the door and they drove away without me. I was ‘her human’ for about 5 years, so it’ll take her a while to feel at home with her new family. But hey, the intend to let her sleep inside, so I know she’ll love that.

So, it’s all quiet here on the farm. Our remaining dog, Rusty, is quite lonely and earlier he even failed to give his all in barking at some kids who rode by on bikes. I mean, when you don’t have a friend to bark with you, it takes the fun out of it, right? We sat together for a little while just after Dr Pepper left, but Rusty is a little annoyed that I don’t play ball with him. I just don’t like touching his slobbery ball anymore. I’m trying to train him to drop the ball instead of give the ball. If I can get him to drop it, then I can use a special ball thrower we got from Australia.

It’s nice to be able to wander into my yard peacefully, rather than being on guard for the onslaught of dogs vying for attention. But it’s also strange. It’s so quiet. Our dogs have been our babies for so long. I think I feel a little lonely, like Rusty does.

Honey and Dr Pepper are both better off in their new homes, cause they will get the love and attention that I can’t give them right now. I have something better and more important to give my attention and time to. Something that I have longed for for many years. As much as I love my dogs, they just can’t capture my attention and affection to the measure that the Little Jelly Bean does…
