On Saturday afternoon we arrived in KL, greeted by the tropical heat and Jenny, our Malaysian Host, who took us to the house where we are staying. It helps to have parents (Sean’s) with connections all over the world, as instead of crashing in a cramped hostel room using a shared bathroom, we are staying at a Pastors house, with our own room and ensuite. The house and yard are spacious, and the kids have lots of room to roam… when we are actually here.
We hit the ground running, pretty much getting to bed late, and waking up early. Today we were at the embassy by 9am, and it took 3 hours to complete everything. Normally it would take about an hour, but today the place was jam packed, standing room only… and we also forgot to bring some paperwork, so Sean was running all over KL taking care of it, while I waited at the Thai Embassy, chasing a precocious 2 year old. When we were finally done, we went to the Petronas Towers for lunch. We’d heard there was a science playground in the mall there, and wanted to take Samantha… it is closed on Mondays. Thank you, Murphy. I am not a fan of your Law. So, we let the kids nap in the stroller, had lunch and then took them to the playground and water park in the shadow of the Towers.
Samantha’s blond hair makes her somewhat of a celebrity. That’s good AND bad.
Today at the water park, everyone wanted to play with her and take a photo with her. At one point, she got the attention of a group of boys (9-11 yr olds) because she was being so daring and rambunctious. They wanted to play with this spunky little blondie. So, she put on a performance for them, and had the boys chasing her all over the pool! She’s not even 3 yet!
They could have played all day. But Mummy was tired, and Mummy makes the rules. As I changed Samantha out of her swimmers, she asked, “Mummy, are you bored?” “Huh, What?” “Are you bored?” Sean chimes in, “Oh, I told her ‘Mummy’s bored, so we have to go home’.” Well, at least she didn’t whine about having to leave. I guess I can take the blame if we avoid that!
Later, as we left, a group of women grabbed her and took her photo. At first she smiled, but then they took too long (wanting individual photos with her) and she ran away. I just told them she was done. I could tell she wanted to be left alone, and I got very protective, as the group started to follow her, watching her every move. Then this guy intercepted us, and grabbed her, forcing her to take a photo with his son. Oh, I was mad. Samantha ran away, and he ran after her! I just got between them and told them no more!! I think I’m gonna have to force her to sit in her stroller to protect her (we were in a big park, so we just let her run, burn off steam). When we arrived back at the house, Samantha was so upset she didn’t even want to talk to the House Keeper! She usually responds well to her.
Wow, Thailand is a utopia! People want to meet her, take photos with her and touch her hair, but they often ask permission first.
I’m hoping tomorrow will be a little more relaxed. The only thing we have to do is pick up our visas from the Thai Embassy… and visit the Zoo, or Bird Park, or Deer Park, or the Batu Caves, or… I’m tired just thinking of the possibilities. Let’s just find a pool and lay beside it all day.
